Children with ADHD struggle to get enough sleep and then their bodies have a hard time focusing and engaging the next day. There are many reasons that sleep is hard for our kiddos, but there are things you can do. Below are my favorite tips to help your child sleep better.
Keep a Regular Bedtime Routine
It’s super important to keep a regular bedtime routine as much as possible. Kids with ADHD really thrive on routine and when they get off schedule, it’s hard for them to calm. So decide on the time you want your child to be in bed with lights out and then work backwards to figure out when to start your bedtime routine. Be sure that bath time, teeth brushing and getting jammies on all happen in sequence so your child will realize that bedtime is near.
Epsom Salt and Serenity Oil Bath
Why take a regular bath, when you can give your child an epsom salt and essential oil bath. Epsom salts contain magnesium and when your child soaks or plays in a bath with epsom salts , the magnesium is absorbed into their skin and promotes calmness. When you add doTerra’s Restful Blend Serenity into the epsom salts you are providing even more peace and calm to your child. Turn Off Electronics
Be sure you are turning off the electronics at least 2 hours before bedtime which will allow your child’s natural melatonin to kick in and make for an easier bedtime routine.
Get Out Your Diffuser and Essential Oils
Essential oils are natural, aromatic compounds that can help calm the mind and body when used topically and aromatically. There are several doTerra oils that help calm and increase sleep. Vetiver, Cedarwood, Lavender, Serenity, Roman Chamomile to name a few. It’s also important to be sure the oils you pick for your family are 100% Pure with no fillers, chemicals, binders or anything artificial. doTerra guarantees every bottle and is 3rd party tested to be sure that the oils are being distilled correctly and contains 100% pure essential oils.
Invest in a Weighted Blanket
A weighted blanket can give your child the deep pressure our kids need to calm. It also helps to regulate the central nervous system as many of these kiddos don’t know where their body is in space, so therefore they need some extra help with that.
White Noise and Black Out Curtains
Depending on the child, these two tips can help immensely as they help the sensory system calm with the white noise and then the black out curtains keep early morning or late evening light out to allow for a deeper sleep.
As you can see there are many ways to support your child with better sleep and the reward you get is a happier and more calm child the next day
